Toregem Biopharma Co., Ltd. is a drug discovery startup founded in May 2020 with the mission of developing regenerative therapeutics for tooth loss. Building on many years of research led by Dr. Katsu Takahashi, then Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University (currently Chief Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kitano Hospital, the Tazuke Kofukai Medical Research Institute), the Company is advancing the development and commercialization of a regenerative therapy designed to enable the natural regrowth of teeth.

Congenital anodontia is a rare disease for which no curative treatment currently exists during childhood. Because patients are still growing and their jawbones have not fully developed, conventional treatment options such as dentures and dental implants are generally unsuitable. As a result, patients must rely on long-term supportive care until adulthood, while missing teeth can adversely affect nutritional intake, physical development, and overall quality of life.

The antibody-based therapeutic injection being developed by Toregem Biopharma aims to regenerate patients’ own natural teeth, offering the potential to become the first disease-modifying treatment for congenital anodontia by addressing the underlying cause of tooth loss rather than merely managing its symptoms. Accelerating the clinical development of what is expected to become the world’s first tooth regeneration therapy has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life of patients living with congenital anodontia.

Looking ahead, the Company’s regenerative technology is also expected to have broader applications in dentistry, including the treatment of oral frailty associated with aging, thereby benefiting a much wider patient population. Furthermore, the accumulation and dissemination of clinical evidence are expected to elevate standards of dental care and contribute to the continued advancement of dental medicine as a whole.
